LOGISTICS MANAGER
As General Manager of Sterling Transportation, I get the opportunity every day to work with our team of professionals, building a great product we can offer the transportation industry that serves our customers’, and partner carriers’, needs for logistical solutions.
Transportation is much more than a business endeavor for me as I believe that trusted relationships are the core of success at every level for our company.
Looking back over my 34 years, here at Sterling Transportation, I am grateful for all the long-term relationships that we have built. It’s very gratifying to me knowing we have the experience to ensure industry challenges are handled with confidence and integrity.
That makes me happy.
I followed a non-linear path into transportation starting with my first job. I was brought up in a commercial fishing family where hard work, risk and reward were the norm.
As I was looking for a life-long career, I found Sterling Transportation. I started in Dispatch and worked my way through the various parts of the company. I found that my skills, background, hard work and a great mentor prepared me for the role of General Manager. My personal goal is to deliver good results daily, both for myself and the company, to ensure that Sterling Transportation is not just a service, but a partner in solving our customer’s logistical challenges, ultimately, we are service-minded.
Something I am very proud of is when I see our drivers and trucks on the road, delivering essential products to communities big and small.
As head of accounting, aka: Comptroller and Human Resources Director, I love what I do for Sterling Transportation. Having full confidence from the owners, employees, and customers, to take care of their needs, both financially and informatively, is the best feeling one could get. Sterling Transportation values my input and ideas, makes me feel like family and overall trusts that I will responsibly take care of our finances and obligations for our company.
The course of my career changed when I switched my major from Nutritional Science to Accounting, completing my Bachelor’s degree in 2003. Dollar signs made way more sense than chemistry formulas which I put to good use as young entrepreneur.
I owned a successful tropical fish retail and service company for 10 years in Arizona. When the opportunity presented itself, I sold the company and relocated to Central Oregon. I found my happiness in this region with its abundant activities, close-knit communities and beautiful outdoors.
I became part of the family at Sterling Transportation where I apply my financial skills and entrepreneurial abilities. As our team steers the company through its phased growth and constant industry changes, my role is to remain centered not only on our bottom line but on our drivers, employees, company goals and excellent customer experience no matter what comes our way.
I’ve spent over 20 years of experience in supply chain logistics gaining extensive Freight Forwarding background both in Operations and Management. After decades in the world of large-company supply chain logistics, I wanted to build something of my own. In 2019, I became a partner in Sterling Transportation and moved back home to Central Oregon to be closer to family and friends.
Every day, I’m excited to get up, go to work and dive into the endless opportunities and challenges facing transportation today. And at the end of the day, I get to see just how much further we have taken this small-town supply chain company as a team. We all work together to put Sterling Transportation on the road and on the map.
I earned a degree in history from Portland State, while working for a large freight forwarding company; sweeping floors and dispatching drivers to help pay for my studies.
After graduation, I started working for a small freight forwarding company to learn the operational side of transportation then moved onto large carriers. I was able to participate in the process of innovating supply chain models which sparked my desire to create that innovation for smaller carriers. When the opportunity came up to join Sterling Transportation, it was the perfect fit for my skills and goals.
I have the honor of being part of the third generation to work in the transportation industry, now as a company owner and decision maker. My family saw the freight industry undergo radical changes in supply chain and infrastructure during the 60s, 70s and 80s and now I am participating in its next evolution. The industry continues to change and evolve due to regulatory changes, technological innovation and creative thinking; Sterling Transportation is part of that innovation.
Every day, I use a unique skill set and work experience to handle the complexities, depths and dimensions inherent in this industry while laying the groundwork for the company’s growth and services in the coming decades.
What I love the most about Sterling Transportation is the family atmosphere. Everyone has a value here and that is utilized to their full potential. Our common goal, as a unit, is to make Sterling Transportation the best company in the industry.
I also appreciate the relationships. We value our customers and partner carriers; all working together to provide transportation solutions. This is what Sterling Transportation does, building relationships and providing services with respect and integrity along the way.
I am the third generation in my family to choose a career in transportation. I started working in the warehouse of a large freight company receiving freight, building loads and loading trucks for multiple carriers. I tested out other careers including work on an Alaskan barge and with a specialty contractor. None of those were as fulfilling as transportation.
After experiencing other industries, I started at a major food supplier working directly with loaders and freight. The company was based in a big city and while I enjoyed the work, I really wanted to raise my family in a smaller, close-knit community. As I looked around for the perfect position and location, I found Sterling Transportation in Central Oregon.
In my current ownership and management position, there are opportunities every day to leverage my strengths as a communicator while remaining true to the meat-and-potatoes guy that I am. Even better, I still work with loaders and dispatchers to build the most efficient and profitable loads My position allows me to be in continual learning mode and communicate with all the members of my team to improve our processes. My ongoing goal is teaching our team how the individual functions they perform impact the upstream and downstream processes eventually leading to the freight being delivered safely to the customer.
At Sterling Transportation, I am part of a 41 year old company that has seen major changes throughout the past four decades. We have succeeded by being strong, nimble and focused. Our success is a direct reflection on our people, customer relationships and commitment to quality. I am proud to contribute my skills, talents, abilities and time to Sterling Transportation as we move into our next decade.
